In Karuizawa, Japan, University of New Mexico senior golfer Victor Perez did his country and himself proud. He and fellow senior Gavin Green also did their school proud.

Perez fired a 6-under 66 on the Iriyama Course in the final round of the World Amateur Team Championships for a 72-total of 20-under-par 266 to finish in tie for second place among the 200 golfers.

Perez finished three strokes behind Arizona State’s Jon Rahm, who was playing for Spain and finished at 23 under.

The Championships featured three-player teams representing 67 countries. The top two scores counted toward each team’s daily score. The tournament took place over two courses – the par-72 Iriyama Course and the par-71 Oshitate Course.

Perez led his French national team to a tie for sixth place with a combined 32 under par, six strokes behind winner United States. The Americans posted a 38-under total to beat Team Canada by two strokes. Spain was third, three strokes back, followed by Sweden (34 under) and Argentina (33 under).

Green tied for 22nd place with an 11-under 275. He shot a 5-under 66 in the final round to carry Malaysian national team to a tie for 35 place at 8 under.

Green, who played for UNM at the Gopher Invitational on Sunday and Monday, flew to Japan to start the tournament on Wednesday morning.

The Lobos will be back in team play Sept. 23-24 at the Husky Invitational in Bremerton, Wash., before hosting the 60th annual William H. Tucker Invitational on Sept. 26-27 at the UNM Championship Course.
