In Karuizawa, Japan, after a weather delay, University of New Mexico senior golfer Victor Perez shot a 6-under 65 on the Oshitate Course to move into a tie for fourth place individually at the World Amateur Team Championships.
Perez, who shot a 3-under 69 during the first round on the Iriyama Course and is at 9-under 134 through the first 18 hole . He trails Sweden’s Marcus Kinhult by three strokes in the individual standings heading into the third round.
The Championships feature three-player teams representing 67 countries. The top two scores count toward each team’s daily score. The tournament will take place over two courses – the par-72 Iriyama Course and the par-71 Oshitate Course.
Perez has led the French National Team to a tie for 11th place at 12 under for the Championships, six strokes behind leader Argentina, which is 18 under.
Fellow Lobo senior Gavin Green is at 3-under 140 and tied for 40th place after a 1-over 72 on the Oshitate Course in the second round. His Malaysian team is tied for 36th at even-par.
UNM will return to action on Sept. 23-24 at the Husky Invitation in Bremerton, Wash., before it plays host to the 60th annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate at the UNM Championship Course on Sept. 26-27.
