In Karuizawa, Japan, University of New Mexico golfers Gavin Green and Victor Perez both led their respective countries during the first round of the World Amateur Team Championships.
The Championships feature three-player teams representing 67 countries. The top two scores count toward each team’s daily score. The tournament will take place over two courses – the par-72 Iriyama Course and the par-71 Oshitate Course.
Green, a Lobo senior representing Malaysia, fired a 4-under 68 at the Iriyama Course and is tied for fifth, three strokes off the individual lead.
Perez, also a Lobo senior who is playing for France, shot a 3-under 69, also at the Iriyama Course and is tied for 18th, four strokes behind leader Marcus Kinhult, who also played the Iriyama Course.
Perez’s Team France is tied for 15th at 4-under 140, six strokes behind Team Canada and Team Sweden, which are tied at 10-under 134 (also on the Iriyama Course).
Team Denmark, which played at the Oshitate Course, is third at 9-under 133.
Green’s Team Malaysia is tied for 36th at 1-under 143.
