ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico sophomore midfielder Josh Goss has been named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week the conference office announced Monday. Goss finished with a goal and an assist in UNM’s two games this weekend.

The Albuquerque native scored his first career goal in the 69th minute Friday night vs. UC Riverside, and it turned out to be the game winner. Niko Hansen perfectly crossed the ball to him in the box. His initial shot was stopped with a diving kick save, but he collected the rebound and calmly finished to give the Lobos a 2-1 victory.

Goss then assisted on James Rogers’ game-tying goal against No. 1 UCLA Sunday night. He received the ball wide on the edge of the box from Mathew Gibbons, and he crossed it into Rogers who used his hip to direct the ball into the net. It was his second career assist.

After appearing in just nine games last year and registering a single assist, Goss has appeared in all three matches this season and has surpassed 2013’s point and shot total. He is the second straight Lobo to earn C-USA Offensive Player of the Week honors to start the season. Oniel Fisher earned the honor last week after scoring the game-winning goal in UNM’s season-opening win against No. 13 Akron.
