Lobos Fall To New Mexico State In Five Innings

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After the University of New Mexico softball took the first game against New Mexico State 4-3 on March 19, the Aggies were looking for revenge and took the second match up of the season 14-2 in five innings on Tuesday at Lobo Softball Field.

The Aggies were on the board first with two runs in the second inning. The Lobos answered in the bottom half of the inning with a Michala Erickson blast over left center to cut the lead to 2-1. The home run was her fifth of the season.

The rest of the game was in New Mexico State’s hand as they scored six in the third and six in the fourth.

The Lobos did score one more run in the third off Brandi Heimburg’s first home run of the season and in a Lobo uniform. It was a lead-off, solo shot to centerfield.

Lauren Soles took the start for the Lobos and pitched 2.1 innings. She allowed six runs off three hits before giving the ball to Carrie Sheehan. Sheehan allowed five runs off seven hits in one inning of work. Lisa Rodrigues came into the game for the final 1.2 innings. She allowed three runs off three hits while striking out a team-high three.

At the plate, Heimburg and Naomi Tellez led the Lobos each going 2-for-3. Heimburg had an RBI and a run scored. Erickson was 1-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Shelbie Franc, Tess McPherson, and Jasmine Casados also had a hit for the Lobos.

The Lobos drop to 16-33 on the season and the Aggies improve to 29-21 overall. New Mexico will get back to conference action this weekend as it will play its final series of the season at Boise State.
