COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of New Mexico’s swimming season has come to a close but competition continues for single diver Megan Harper as she took on the first day of the 2014 NCAA Zone E Diving Zones.
The native of Phoenix, Ariz., represented the Lobos at the Cadet Natatorium in the 1-meter springboard event as she placed 12th in the preliminary round with a score of 262.75 points. A seven-place jump from her 19th-place standing last season.
She came in 15th-place overall earlier today with a final score of 519.50 points.
“Megan is a great inspiration for the Lobos. Last year she didn’t qualify on the 1-meter. She is loved by so many coaches and is a great role model to the younger divers,” says diving coach Julie Weddle.
Two days of competition remain for Harper as she will fight for a qualifying spot among 23 other teams; qualifiers will be announced Saturday.
Senior Megan Harper has proven successful recently as she was named this season’s Mountain West champion off the 3-meter, whether or not her success will carry over in the NCAA Diving Zones will be determined in the upcoming rounds.
Up next is the 3-meter preliminary event beginning tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
