ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico’s softball team will be on the road for the third weekend in a row, heading to Palm Springs, Calif., for the Mary Nutter Classic.
Last weekend, the Lobos went 0-4 at the Hillenbrand Invitational with losses to No. 14/14 Arizona and No. 9/7 Alabama. Sophomore Naomi Tellez continues to lead the Lobos at the plate. She hit .500 (5-for-10) over the weekend, scored two runs, hit her first two home runs of the season and tallied three RBIs. Her first home run cam in the Lobos’ 4-2 loss against Grand Canyon and her second came in the 6-4 loss against Tennessee State.
Tellez is in the top-10 in five statistical categories in the conference. She is first in batting average (.571), third in slugging percentage (1.000), fourth in on-base percentage (.609), sixth with 12 hits and seventh with 21 total bases. In her 12 hits, Tellez owns one doule, one triple and two home runs.
This weekend, the Lobos will be looking to snap their five-game losing streak. The Lobos will be matched up against LIU Brooklyn, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, Cal Poly and No. 8/9 UCLA. UCLA is the fifth top-25 ranked team that the Lobos will face this season.
UNM’s first game will be Friday against LIU Brooklyn at 11:30 a.m. MT/10:30 a.m. PT.
