In Sea Island, Ga., University of New Mexico junior Gavin Green shot a 1-over 73 Saturday and vaulted 17 spots to a tie for 20th after two rounds of the Jones Cup Invitational.
Green has a 36-hole total of 149, which puts him at 5 over par and five strokes behind a trio of players – SMU’s Bryson Dechambeau, 50-year-old amateur Mike McCoy and first-round tri-leader Greg Eason of Central Florida. The three are at even-par 144.
Green caught fire in the final five holes, finishing at 3 under par. His day was opposite that of his Lobo teammate Victor Perez. Perez shot a 6-over 78 for the second straight day and is tied for 70th place at 12-over 156.
Perez birdied two of his first four holes and was 2 under for the round and 4 over for the tournament heading into the back nine. But Perez came in at 8-over on hole Nos. 10-18 to fall off the pace.
The event, which fields 90 of the nation’s top amateurs, concludes today at the Ocean Forest Golf Club.
