2003 (Sophomore) – Led the Mountain West in walks with 54 and runs with 76…fourth in the MWC with a .468 on-base percentage…batted in the leadoff spot in every game played…batted .320 with one homer and 25 RBI…stole 10 bases…solid defensive player with a .975 fielding percentage and 22 assists…had two 12-game hitting streaks…went a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI and four runs vs. New Mexico State (3/9)…hit .412 (21-51) during first 12-game hitting streak (3-1/21), including four doubles, a triple and a homer…during his second 12-game hitting streak (3/23-4/12), batted a whopping .469 (23-49), scored 19 runs, hit five doubles and drove in seven runs…drew a season-high three walks vs. Oregon State (2/21)…had two doubles and a triple in a perfect 3-for-3 plate performance vs. Texas A&M Corpus Christi and also scored four runs (3/30)…season-high four assists vs. Arkansas State (2/15)…went 4-for-4 with a homer vs. New Mexico State (3/9)…3-for-5 with three runs at Utah (3/23)…collected three hits in 10 different games…Academic All-Mountain West honoree.
2002 (Freshman) – Showered with numerous accolades following his outstanding freshman campaign…Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American, first team All-Mountain West Conference selection, academic all-conference with a 3.2 GPA and was chosen UNM’s 2001-02 Male Athlete of the Year…played in 55 games with 54 starts…hit .385 on the season, good for second on the team…led the MWC in on-base percentage (.498) and tied for the lead with 42 walks…team leader in runs (64), HBP (9) and stolen bases (17)…reached base safely in all but one game…off to a torrid start in his collegiate career, batting a salty .440 through 25 games…career-high 4 hits against Southern Utah (2/13) and at Utah (5/3)…hit safely in 47 of 55 games…posted a 22-game hitting streak from 3/10 to 4/21, batting 32-85 (.376) with 27 runs scored…scored 3 runs in a game five times…career-best 3 RBI vs. Utah (3/16)…had 21 multi-hit games…just four errors in 128 chances…hit .386 with team-highs of 14 walks and 9 stolen bases in UNM’s fall intrasquad games.
High School – Was a three-year letterwinner for coach Don English at Plano East HS…hit .498 with five home runs as a senior…named all-state as a senior and all-district as a junior…THSBCA all-star game MVP in 2001…batted .333 with four HR and a .555 on-base percentage as a junior…played on the Dallas Hurricanes in Connie Mack summer ball…squad finished 6th in the AAU age under-17 national championships, and Young was named to the all-tournament team by batting over .500.
