ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico senior punter Ben Skaer is one of 25 players selected on the 2013 Ray Guy Award Preseason watch list that goes annually to the nation’s top collegiate punter, the Augusta Sports Council announced Wednesday.
Skaer ranked 17th in the nation last season in punting with a 43.85-yard average per attempt. The Waterloo, Ill., native also helped the Lobos finish first in the Mountain West and 24th in the nation in net punting with a 39.0-yard average per attempt.
Skaer earned MW Special Teams Player of the Week honors during the 2012 season finale against Colorado State, averaging 50.4 yards per attempt against the Rams. In that game, he had one punt travel 64 yards for a touchback and three others land inside the CSU 10.
That game also capped a three-game streak in which Skaer earned College Football Performance Award honorable mentions for his play.
The number of eligible candidates for the Ray Guy Award this season will grow when the award opens for nominations in September. The complete list of candidates will be released on Oct. 25. In early November, the Ray Guy Award committee will meet to select 10 semifinalists, who will be announced on Nov. 8.
A national body of Football Bowl Subdivision sports information directors, coaches, media representatives, and previous Ray Guy Award winners will then vote for the top three finalists, to be announced on Nov. 25. After the finalists are named, the voting body will cast ballots again to select the nation’s top punter. The winner will be announced live during The Home Depot College Football Awards airing on ESPN on Dec. 12, 2013.
