COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico, the fourth seed in the 2013 MW Men’s Tennis Championship, upset regular season champion and No. 1 seed San Diego State 4-2 in Saturday’s semifinal contest at the United States Air Force Academy Tennis Facility to advance to the championship match.
The No. 66 Lobos (14-12) will take on defending tournament champion, No. 2 Boise State (4-0 winners over UNLV), Sunday at 2 p.m. MT. The winner earns the Conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
New Mexico jumped out to a 1-0 lead by virtue of its winning the doubles point, and then went up 2-0 when Andy Van Der Vyver turned back the Aztecs’ Andranik Khachatryan in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
The Lobos’ Conor Berg won his No. 2 singles contest over Thorsten Bertsch, 7-5, 6-4 and No. 1 singles player Jadon Phillips secured the match’s decisive point with a three-set win over Derek Siddiqui, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.
The Aztecs finish the year with an 18-8 record.
In the other semifinal, No. 46 Boise State (19-9) won the doubles point over UNLV, and then claimed the No. 2, 5 and 4 singles matches – all in straight sets – for the victory.
Nathan Sereke turned back the 2012-13 MW Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Year, Gilad Berman, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 singles. At No. 5 singles, Thomas Tenreiro zipped past Charlie Alvarado, 6-3, 6-2, and at No. 4 singles, Filipp Pogostkin earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Bernard Schoeman.
The No. 62 Rebels finish the year with a 17-7 record.
