Learfield Sports Director’s Cup Final Winter Standings
Cleveland, Ohio — The University of New Mexico ranks 46th in the nation in the updated Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings released Thursday. The latest rankings come after the conclusion of the winter sports season. New Mexico earned points for men’s basketball, men’s indoor track and field, and skiing in the winter season.
UNM is the only Mountain West institution in the top 50 of the rankings. The Lobos are third, behind 26th place Princeton, and behind BYU, which is just ahead of the Lobos at 45th, among schools from non-BCS conferences. Furthermore, New Mexico is one of only four institutions in the top 50 from a non-BCS conference.
The Lobos earned 25 points in men’s basketball with a tie for 33rd, 72 points in skiing with a sixth place finish, and track and field took in 23 points by finishing 49th. UNM has 304.5 points currently, and should score points in the spring.
The University of New Mexico was also ranked in the top 20 after the fall season and is coming off its highest-ever finish in the 2011-12 academic year. Last year saw the Lobos finish 41st in the nation and second among all non-BCS institutions.
