2013 New Mexico Softball Virtual Media Guide
SEATTLE — No. 19/16 Washington shut out the University of New Mexico on Saturday night, 12-0, in five innings on the second day of the Husky Classic. The Lobos drop to an even 13-13 while the Huskies improve to 17-5.
Junior first baseman Jordan Sjostrand got UNM’s lone hit — a single to left field in the top of the third inning — and was the only Lobo to reach base all night as UW’s Kaitlin Inglesby and Bryana Walker nearly pitched a perfect game.
Washington pounded out 13 hits and scored at least one run in each inning, starting with three in the first. The Huskies added one in the bottom of the second as Victoria Hayward homered to right field, and then put up five runs on five hits in the third before adding three runs on three hits in the fourth.
Senior Kaela DeBroeck got the start and takes the loss. She faced 18 batters over 2 1/3 innings, allowing nine hits and eight earned runs while walking one and striking out two.
Freshman Lisa Rodrigues came in for relief efforts and threw 1 2/3 innings. She faced 13 batters, giving up four hits and three earned runs while walking four and striking out one.
“We got outplayed today,” head coach Erica Beach said. “We did not play to our capabilities and Washington fired on all cylinders. They played a great game and we have to tip our cap to them.
“We just need to refocus on tomorrow’s game and recover quick.”
New Mexico plays Yale at 11 a.m. MT on Sunday.
