Maybank Malaysia Open Final Leaderboard
In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, University of New Mexico sophomore Gavin Green walked away from $29,246 on Sunday.
The Lobo’s homecoming was impressive as he finished tied for 22nd in the Maybank Malaysian Open with a 6-under 210. The event was shortened to 54 holes due to rain.
Green finished seven strokes behind Malaysian Open champion Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand. Aphibarnrat shot 13-under 203 to beat Italy’s Edoardo Molinari by one stroke and take home the $455,534 first-prize money.
Green (73-68-69) actually played the final 36 holes one stroke better than Aphibarnrat (65-68-70).
2011 Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel finished tied for fourth at 10 under after a final-round 71. Three-time majors champion Padraig Harrington finished tied for sixth at 9 under.
Green, who is from Kuala Lumpur, would have earned the $29,000-plus if he were a professional, rather than the 32nd-ranked collegian (by Golfweek.com) for the No. 3 UNM men’s golf team.
Green entered the tournament hoping for a top-20 finish but came up two spots and one stroke shy of that mark.
