Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Week Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
University of New Mexico senior James Erkenbeck earned Mountain West Men’s Co-Golfer of the week for tournaments played March 5-10. Fresno State freshman Troix Tonkham shared the weekly honor.
Erkenbeck finished in a four-way tie for first at the prestigious Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters from March 8-10. The event featured 28 players ranked in Golfweek.com/Sagarin’s Top 50 individual poll.
The senior from San Diego shot a 4-under 212 (69-72-71) on the par-72, 7,510 Southern Highlands course. He led UNM to a tie for second place in a field of 15 top-50 teams (according to both Golfweek.com/Sagarin and Golfstat.com).
The Lobos have finished first or second in each of their last six tournaments. Their second-place tie allowed them to move up from No. 5 to No. 3 in the nation in the latest Golfweek.com/Sagarin team rankings.
The individual title was the second in Erkenbeck’s Lobo career. He won the 2009 John Burns Intercollegiate as a true freshman.
Erkenbeck jumped from 20th to 10th in the Golfweek.com/Sagarin poll as a result of his performance, and he leads the MW with a 71.63 stroke average. The award is his second weekly honor this spring. He also was named MW Golfer of the Month in October.
Lobo sophomore Gavin Green also has a MW weekly honor this spring.
