The University of New Mexico women’s golf team is in ninth place after the first round of the Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford, Calif. The Lobos shot an 18-over 302 at the Stanford Golf Course.
California leads the 13-team field at 1 over 285. Host Stanford is second, four shots behind, at 289.
The final round of a rare 36-hole tournament begins Sunday with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Mountain Time.
The Lobos were led by junior Sammi Stevens, who fired a 1-under 70 on the 6,084-yard layout. She played the last nine holes in 3 under to equal her low round of the season. Stevens is tied for sixth place, two shots behind San Jose State’s Megan Oslund, who has the lead at 3 under 68.
UNM junior Manon De Roey, the Mountain West’s top-ranked golfer with a scoring average of 73.25, finished bogey-bogey for a 3 over 74. She is tied for 21st after bogeys at 14 and 15.
Senior Beth Buchner is tied for 45th at 7 over 78. Junior Sofia Hoglund was stung by three double bogeys while shooting an 80. Freshman Ira Knopf shot 83 and is in 64th.
