ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) –
Alex Kirk scored seven of his 15 points in an early New Mexico run to help the No. 17 Lobos beat downstate rival New Mexico State 73-58 on Saturday.
Kendall Williams added 15 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Lobos (11-0), while Chad Adams had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Kirk also equaled a career high with five blocks, part of a strong New Mexico defensive performance that limited the Aggies to 32.8 percent shooting from the field. New Mexico State shot 8 for 30 in the second half and made just four of 16 3-pointers.
Daniel Mullings scored 14 to lead New Mexico State (5-5). He was the only Aggies player in double figures.
The Lobos went on a decisive 11-2 run midway through the first half, turning a 17-14 lead into a 28-16 advantage.
The Aggies pulled to 43-36 early in the second half, but New Mexico regained a double-digit lead with an 11-4 surge. Adams and Jamal Fenton hit 3-pointers during the run.
New Mexico blocked 11 shots, with guard Hugh Greenwood swatting away four. The Lobos also had a season-low six turnovers, outscoring New Mexico State 17-9 off miscues.
New Mexico was 26 for 35 from the free throw line, while the Aggies went 16 of 19.
Tyrone Watson, New Mexico State’s second-leading scorer, missed all five of his shots from the field and finished with four points and 11 rebounds.
