UNM vs. Davidson *** Albuquerque, N.M.
- New Mexico opens its 110th season with an 86-81 victory over Davidson…attendance was 14,277 for a game that started at 12:05 a.m. locally…the game ended at 2:20 a.m.
- UNM overcame a 16-point deficit – the last time at 47-31 early in the 2nd half…the 16-point comeback equals the largest by a Steve Alford-coached Lobo team…on Dec. 19, 2009, in The Pit, UNM trailed Creighton 31-15 with 5:55 left in the first half before winning 66-61
- Tonight, UNM used a 14-2 run to take its first lead of the game at 63-62 with 7:55 remaining on 2 FTs by Hugh Greenwood
- In the decisive 2nd half, UNM out-rebounded Davidson 27-7 and had a 13-0 scoring margin on 2nd-chance points
- New Mexico was 38-44 (86.4%) from the FT line, including 26-28 (92.9%) in the 2nd half
Davidson once had a 13-3 rebound margin, but UNM ended up winning the board battle decisively, 45-28…the Lobos had a 42-15 rebound advantage the last 31:22 - Both teams committed 2 turnovers in the 2nd half
- Davidson jumped out to a 10-0 lead…the Lobos’ first points came on their 7th possession at the 16:15 mark on 2 free throws by Tony Snell…UNM missed its first 5 FGs…the first basket – by Demetrius Walker – came at 15:37
- Davidson’s biggest lead in the 1st half was 16 (25-9) at the 12:10 mark…UNM cut the deficit to 6 (37-31) on a FG and FT by Tony Snell with 1:34 left, but the Wildcats scored the final 8 points of the half for a 45-31 halftime lead
- New Mexico is 79-26 all-time in home openers, 43-4 in The Pit and has won 10 in a row…the last home-opening loss was Nov. 23, 2002, a 76-68 setback to California
- The Lobos are 2-0 all-time against Davidson…UNM beat the Wildcats 92-77 in the first round of the 1978 Lobo Invitational
- UNM is 6-0 all-time against current members of the Southern Conference
- The Lobos have won 40 straight games and are 52-1 overall when scoring 80 or more points under head coach Steve Alford…the only loss was 82-80 in overtime to Utah in the 2008 Mountain West Tournament in Las Vegas
