ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico sophomore forward James Rogers became the fourth Lobo to earn a spot on TopDrawerSoccer.com’s National Team of the Week. His goal and an assist in UNM’s 6-0 win over Houston Baptist gave Rogers his first National Team of the Week award of his career. Rogers’ national award marks the sixth time a Lobo has earned a spot on the prestigious National Team of the Week this season.
The speedy attacking player from Sierra Leone now has seven goals and five assists in his second season with New Mexico. His seven goals this season is over twice the number of scores from his freshman season, which saw him garner Third Team All-MPSF honors. He currently sits tied for fourth in the MPSF in goals and points.
Rogers joins teammates Kyle Venter (once), Victor Rodriguez (once) and Devon Sandoval (three times) as Lobos making appearances on the nationally-recognized weekly team.
It has been a good week for Rogers with regards to national awards. He was one of three Lobos to make the Capital One Academic All-District Team last week.
Rogers and the rest of the Lobos are preparing for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament as the regular season champions, number one seed and tournament host. The Lobos’ regular season conference championship was their eighth in twelve years. With an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament on the line, New Mexico will look to make their ninth NCAA Tournament in eleven years with a tournament win.
The Lobos will next play in the conference semifinals against the lowest-remaining seed at 7:30 p.m. (MT) on Friday, November 9 at the UNM Soccer Complex.
