ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The tenth-ranked University of New Mexico Lobos (12-3-0, 5-2-0 MPSF) enter the home stretch of MPSF play with their last conference road trip of the season. They begin the weekend with a match at San Jose State (6-7-1, 3-3-1 MPSF).
#10 NEW MEXICO AT A GLANCE: UNM is coming off a dominating weekend that saw the team dial in on offense and defense. It began with their record-breaking 11-0 win versus UNLV. The eleven goals were the most scored by a NCAA Division I team this season, and it was the most scored by New Mexico against a Division I opponent in program history. They followed that up with a 2-0 shutout of CSU Bakersfield two days later. That victory saw the Lobos shutout one of the most potent offense in college soccer.
SAN JOSE STATE AT A GLANCE: The Spartans have been a team of streaks in 2012. In their last six games, SJSU won the first three games before dropping their last three coming into Friday night’s match. In those three losses, which were to UNLV, Air Force and Denver, the Spartans gave up ten goals.
COACH FISHBEIN: Jeremy Fishbein is in his eleventh season as head coach at New Mexico. The program is 149-47-25 on his watch and has qualified for the NCAA Tournament eight out of his ten seasons in Albuquerque. Under Fishbein, the Lobos have a record of 73-16-9 (.790) in MPSF play.
LOBOS TO WATCH: The Lobo attack has been lead by a pair of familiar faces. Seniors Blake Smith and Devon Sandoval are not only the team and conference leaders in assists and goals, but they rank among the nation’s best offensively. Smith has registered eleven assists, which is tied for first in the nation. His counterpart Sandoval ranks sixth in the NCAA in goals with twelve scores.
