ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The seventh-ranked University of New Mexico will host the second and final day of the TLC Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Lobo Invitational. Sunday’s finale has the Lobos facing UC Irvine. It will be the first of a Lobo Soccer doubleheader with the UNM women scheduled to play at 4 p.m.
#7 NEW MEXICO AT A GLANCE: New Mexico downed Dartmouth 3-2 in the first day of action of the invitational. It was a back-and-forth affair that saw two goals in the first three minutes and four goals in the first seventeen minutes. Once the game settled down, the Lobos took possession of the ball and the match to clinch the victory. The win pushed UNM’s current home regular season unbeaten streak to 14 games, which ties second most in program history.
UC IRVINE AT A GLANCE: The Anteaters were ranked eleventh in the nation two weeks ago before losing to Stanford and UCLA last weekend. It looked like they were going to lose a third game in a row on Friday after going down 2-0 to Missouri State. Irvine rallied with two goals in the second half to force the draw.
COACH FISHBEIN: Jeremy Fishbein enters his eleventh season as head coach at New Mexico. The program is 141-45-25 on his watch and has qualified for the NCAA Tournament eight out of his ten seasons in Albuquerque. Under Fishbein, the Lobos have a record of 73-31-16 (.673) against non-conference opponents in the regular season and the NCAA Tournament.
LOBOS TO WATCH: After winning back-to-back MPSF Player of the Week awards, Devon Sandoval was relatively quiet in UNM’s 2-0 victory over No. 25 UAB. He re-introduced himself to his home crowd with his goal in the third minute of the win versus Dartmouth. The native of Albuquerque now has four goals and an assist in the Lobos’ five matches this year.
ALL-TIME VS. UC IRVINE: The two programs are neck-and-neck in their eleven head-to-head match-ups. UCI holds a slight advantage with the 6-5 record in the series. While the series is very close, the last four matches have been even closer. They have all been decided by one goal. Coach Fishbein is 1-2 versus UC Irvine as head coach of the Lobos.
DOWN THE ROAD: It will be another weekend of home tournament action for the Lobos next weekend. New Mexico hosts the Nike Lobo Invitational, which welcomes Denver, Fairfield and Northern Illinois to the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos will face Fairfield on Friday, September 21st and Northern Illinois on Sunday, September 23rd.
