ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The eighth-ranked University of New Mexico face fellow ranked team #25 UAB in the Lobos’ 2012 regular season home opener. The Blazers have fallen to a record to 2-1-1 after a tie with #7 UNC Charlotte and a loss to East Tennessee State last weekend.

#8 NEW MEXICO AT A GLANCE: New Mexico is coming off a split of their two games played in the Tulsa Invitational last weekend. The Lobos lost to Tulsa 2-1 in overtime and defeated #20 SMU 3-1 on Sunday. The loss to Tulsa was the program’s first since losing to Creighton in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

#25 UAB AT A GLANCE: The UAB Blazers are one of the perennial powers in Conference USA. They are the defending conference champions who lost to national champion runner-up Charlotte in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The team was picked to finish fourth in Conference USA’s preseason coaches’ poll. Senior defender Reed Matte was voted to the Preseason All-Conference USA team.

COACH FISHBEIN: Jeremy Fishbein enters his eleventh season as head coach at New Mexico.  The program is 139-45-25 on his watch and has qualified for the NCAA Tournament eight out of his ten seasons in Albuquerque. This will be the first-ever match-up between Coach Fishbein and UAB.

LOBOS TO WATCH: Devon Sandoval is the obvious leader in this category and for good reason. The senior forward is the back-to-back MPSF Player of the Week through the first two weeks of the season. He has three goals and an assist in UNM’s first three games of this year. His fellow senior, Blake Smith, is also a Lobo to watch. Smith recorded a goal and an assist during last weekend’s Tulsa Invitational.

ALL-TIME VS. #25 UAB: This will be the first-ever match-up between the Lobos and the Blazers. It will be the first of many as the University of New Mexico men’s soccer program will join Conference USA beginning next season. UNM and UAB are two of the conference’s nine members starting next season.

DOWN THE ROAD: The 2012 home opener versus UAB is the first of a five-game home stand for the Lobos. New Mexico will play host tournaments on the next two weekends. September 14th-16th is the TLC Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Lobo Invitational, which will see the Lobos take on Dartmouth and UC Irvine.
