WOODLAND, Calif. – Devon Sandoval was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. The senior from Albuquerque was one of three Lobos to tally a goal in New Mexico’s 3-1 defeat of #20 SMU.
The win against Mustangs also saw Sandoval take a new career-high of seven shots in the game. It was part of an offensive barrage for the Lobos that out-shot SMU 22-6, which was the biggest differential since UNM out-shot Air Force by 17 in the 2010 season.
Three games into the 2012 season, the forward has tallied seven points (three goals and an assist) to lead the Lobos. His point total leads all MPSF players, and he becomes the first player to win back-to-back P.O.W since Gyasi Zardes of CSU Bakersfield in the 2011 season.
Sandoval was also College Soccer News’ National Player of the Week last week. In addition to the individual awards, he was also named to TopDrawerSoccer.com’s National Team of the Week.
Sandoval and the rest of the New Mexico squad return to action this week with their home opener. The Lobos will host #25 UAB on Friday, September 7th at 7 p.m. (MT) at the UNM Soccer Complex.
