ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The third-ranked University of The Lobos face fellow ranked team #20 SMU on Sunday afternoon. It marks the second game of the weekend for the Lobos who lost 2-1 to Tulsa in overtime Friday night. It will be the second ranked opponent for the Lobos of the season after they defeated then #2 UCLA on August 24th.
NEW MEXICO AT A GLANCE: The Lobos are coming off their first loss in 23 games after losing 2-1 to Tulsa in overtime Friday night. The Lobos were forced to play a man down after Travis Campbell received a red card for an intentional handball in the box early in the first half. Despite losing a man, UNM outshot Tulsa and held an advantage in corner kicks. It was the program’s first loss since losing to Creighton in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
SMU AT A GLANCE: SMU began the season ranked 16th in the nation but fell to 20th after getting a draw against Campbell in the first week of the season. They, like the Lobos, also lost on the first day of action of the Tulsa Invitational. The Mustangs dropped a 1-0 decision to #4 USF Friday afternoon.
COACH FISHBEIN: Jeremy Fishbein enters his eleventh season as head coach at New Mexico. The program is 138-45-25 on his watch and has qualified for the NCAA Tournament eight out of his ten seasons in Albuquerque. The Lobos are 1-1-1 against SMU in the Fishbein era.
LOBOS TO WATCH: Seniors Blake Smith and Devon Sandoval were responsible for all three goals against UCLA. Yet only Smith registered a point in UNM’s loss to Tulsa with an assist on the Matthew Gibbons goal. The pair will both look to find the back of the net at least once during the Tulsa Invitational. However, junior Michael Calderon scored in both exhibition games leading up to the UCLA win. Calderon had several chances to score against UCLA and Tulsa but was unable to find the net. Keep an eye on Smith, Sandoval and Calderon in the match against SMU.
ALL-TIME VS. SMU: The Lobos and Mustangs have met nine times beginning in 1985. SMU has the upper hand in the series amassing a 5-3-1 record against the Mustangs. The two teams last met in the 2006 season when the Lobos earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the then-top-ranked Mustangs.
