Mountain West Spring 2012 Academic All-Conference Release
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A month after the school year has ended, the University of New Mexico can add another Mountain West championship to its collection.
The Mountain West announced its 2011-12 Scholar-Athlete Award recipients today. A total of 471 student-athletes, who competed in varsity NCAA-sponsored sports, completed at least two academic terms at their respective institutions and maintained a cumulative 3.5 grade point average or higher, were honored. That includes 61 student-athletes recognized in multiple sports.
The Lobos had the highest number of scholar-athletes in the league with 97. Nine of those were honored in multiple sports, giving UNM 106 total awards. The nine Lobos who were two-sport scholars in women’s cross country and track and field: Imogen Ainsworth, Kirsten Follett, Kirsty Milner, Janna Mitsos, Lacey Oeding, Emma Reed, Ruth Senior, Sophia Torres and Sarah Waldron.
Boise State was a distant second with 70 scholar-athletes earning a total of 83 awards.
And of the 39 student-athletes in the conference to carry a 4.0 GPA or better, 18 were Lobos, led by swimmer Carlie McGregor’s 4.33 mark.
