University of New Mexico Vice President of Athletics Paul Krebs has issued a statement regarding the recommended $50 increase in UNM student athletic fees.
“On behalf of our student-athletes and our coaches I would like to thank the Board of Regents and President Schmidly for their support of our athletic program. We recognize these are difficult decisions in tough economic times. UNM student athletic fees are some of the lowest in the country among non-BCS schools and in the Mountain West. With the recommended $50 increase today our student athletic fees will generate roughly $3.1 million dollars next year depending on enrollment and would be comparable to other non-BCS schools. Still the student fees would represent only 10% of the overall athletic budget with athletics generating 83% through revenue sources and the state accounting for the other 7%.”
“It is important to point out the additional fee monies will not be used to cover our anticipated deficit for fiscal year 2012 but to assist with our annual operating budget and the student-athlete experience.”
“The Department looks forward to working with our student leaders to answers concerns they may have and how to greater involve the student body into the athletic programs.”
