Cleveland, Ohio — The New Mexico Lobos have moved up seven spots and are currently ranked 17th in the latest Learfield Sports Director’s Cup standings, released today. The Lobos are the highest ranked non-BCS school after picking up points in all four of the winter sports that have completed that UNM compete in.

The first of three winter standings updates contains the winter championships of women’s ice hockey, rifle, men’s wrestling, men’s indoor track and field, women’s indoor track and field, skiing, and swimming and diving. UNM only competed in both tracks, skiing and swimming and diving, but the Lobo placed in all four national meets.

New Mexico picked up the most points in skiing, as UNM’s eighth place finish translated into 66 points. The Lobos finished 15th in men’s indoor track and field, good for 58.5 points. UNM also finished 49th in swimming and diving for 24.5 points, and 62nd in women’s indoor track and field, for 11 points.

New Mexico has picked up 160 points in the winter, to combine with the 164 points in the fall, for a total for 324 points, which is 17th place. The next highest non-BCS team is BYU, which is 30th. The next highest Mountain West team is TCU in 47th place.

Stanford is the leader after the first of three winter updates with 648.75 points, followed by Florida State, Wisconsin, Penn State, Texas, Minnesota, Ohio State, UCLA, Florida, and North Carolina rounding out the top 10.

New Mexico will pick up a few more points for men’s basketball when the next Learfield Sports Director’s Cup Standings come out in early April.
