Alaska Anchorage Results Day 1 ![]()
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The University of New Mexico currently sits in sixth place after day one of the Alaska Anchorage Invitational. The Lobos competed in the first portion of Nordic events Saturday, as both the men and women participated in 5K Classical races.
Linn Klaesson continued to impress after recording the highest finish on the day of any Lobo, placing sixth in the 5K Classical race with a time of 17:15.6.
“Linn (Klaesson) had an excellent race, once again, finishing sixth,” head coach Fredrik Landstedt said.
Newcomer Clara Chauvet was the next closest to Klaesson for the women, posting a 19th-place finish. Anita Kirvesniemi and Anni Nord finished 22nd and 27th, respectively, and Ingrid Leask made her first appearance of the year for UNM, finishing in 28th place.
“Clara (Chauvet) also skied well for us,” Landstedt said.
The men were once again led by freshman Sjur Prestseater, who crossed the finish line in 12th place with a time of 14:49.2. The rest of the team didn’t live up to coach Landstedt’s expectations as Eivind Solberg and Pierre Niess came in 25th and 28th, respectively.
“It is time for the men to step it up and show that they want to be in the top when we continue racing on Monday,” Landstedt said.
As a team, the women finished in fifth place and the men claimed sixth place. The meet will continue on Monday, as the men’s and women’s Nordic teams will compete in freestyle races. The Alpine portion of the meet will pick up next weekend on Feb. 8 and 10. Meanwhile, both the Alpine and Nordic teams will compete in the Seawolf Invitational to be held Feb. 9-11 in Anchorage, Alaska and Girdwood, Alaska.
