After four days of competition that spanned over two weekends, the University of New Mexico ski team finished the University of Denver Invitational in fifth place with 695 points.

Utah took the tournament crown, compiling 902 points. Colorado (842 points), Alaska Anchorage (770 points), and Denver (752 points) placed ahead of UNM.

In the final day of competition of the DU Invitational at Devil’s Thumb Ranch in Tabernash, Colo., the Lobo women’s Nordic ski team had an exceptional race, claiming second place in the 10K freestyle with a team score of 99 points. New Mexico edged Colorado (97 points) and came in behind Alaska Anchorage (133 points).

Pacing the Lobo women was Linn Klaesson, placing 10th with a 38:19. She was followed by Anni Nord, who finished the race in 38:41 and claimed 12th place.

“I am very happy with the women’s performance today,” said head coach Fredrik Landstedt. “Clara Chauvet had her career best, and Anni Nord had her best skate race.”

Crossing the finish line first for the Lobo men was Sjur Prestseater, placing 14th overall in the men’s 15K freestyle with a time of 50:11.3. Christian Otto finished 19th, clocking a time of 50:57.8, while Pierre Niess rounded out New Mexico’s top-three skiers coming in 29th with a time of 54:39.2.

“The men need to improve, but overall it was a step in the right direction,” Landstedt said.

Up next for the Lobo Ski Team is the Alaska Anchorage Invitational and Seawolf Invitational, happening simultaneously Feb. 4-11 at Kincaid Park in Anchorage, Alaska and Alyeska Ski Resort in Girdwood, Alaska
