ALBUQUERUQUE, N.M. — The UNM swimming and diving team will head to Colorado State this weekend to face the Rams in the final meet against a conference foe before the Mountain West conference championships take place Feb. 22-25 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
The Lobos go into the meet with a solid record of 7-4 overall, after defeating four of the five squads present at the Maverick Meet (Jan. 14). The Rams go into the meet with a record of 2-5. Colorado State has not competed since Nov. 19 when the team traveled to Houston and swam in the Cougar Classic Fall Invitational.
“Going into this meet we’re looking to improve on the showings that we’ve had the past two meets,” Head Coach Tracy Ljone said. “We have been training hard and we want to go to Colorado this weekend and come back with a win.”
Last season when New Mexico faced Colorado State- at Seidler Natotorium- they fell to the Rams by a final score of 180-120.
“Colorado State is usually a very good and solid team,” she said. The meet against them last season was one of the closest and tightest ones we’ve had so we want to go in strong.”
The dual meet against the Rams will also serve as the first meet of 2012 for Abel Sanchez and his squad of divers. This past December the divers traveled to Knoxville, Tenn., and participated in the USA Diving Winter Nationals. Senior Ashlee Erickson continued what has been a fantastic senior campaign and placed 10th in the 1-meter springboard. The meet also proved to be valuable experience for a team that has been plagued by injuries throughout the course of the season.
Following the meet against CSU, New Mexico will have a week of rest before the gear up to host Rio Grande Rival New Mexico State. The meet against the Aggies will be the final home meet of the season for the Lobos as well as Senior Night. At the end of the season Coach Ljone will be saying goodbye to nine seniors.
