During the same weekend that the UNM swimming and diving team found themselves taking on conference foe San Diego State, Jorgi Hobson found herself taking on some of the toughest competition in the country. Hobson participated in the USA Swimming Winter Nationals at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The meet served as preparation for Olympic Trials.

During the meet Hobson swam the 100-yard butterfly, the event in which she currently holds the school record in.

“Jorgi didn’t have her best time but it was a great experience and she will have more opportunities to make her Olympic Trial cut,” said Head Swimming Coach Tracy Ljone.

Hobson then flew cross country and helped the Lobos compete against the Aztecs. “Jorgi is one tough competitor and I am excited to see her swim next semester,” said Ljone.

Hobson has made a tremendous impact in the short time she has been a Lobo. The native of Las Cruces, NM who graduated from Las Cruces High School is currently the owner of the school record in the 100-yard butterfly with a top time of 55.46.

She also has the second fastest time in that event with a time of 55.92, in addition to having the second fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.44. Hobson was also a part of the relay teams that currently hold the top times in the 200- and 400-yard medley relay event.

Hobson and the rest of the UNM swimming team will jump back into action on Jan. 14 when they travel to Grand Junction, Colo., to participate in the Maverick Meet. Last year when the Lobos participated in the Maverick Meet they defeated host Mesa State 235-27, Northern Colorado 167-121, Colorado School of Mines 240-58 and the CU Boulder Club Team 245-16.
