ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The UNM swimming and diving program travels to California this weekend to take on an undefeated San Diego State squad. The Aztecs, who are the defending Mountain West regular season and conference champions, currently sit at 6-0 overall, with a 2-0 conference mark. The Lobos are at 3-2 overall with a 1-1 conference record.
The meet against San Diego State will be the first dual meet for New Mexico since the team dropped its contest against Wyoming on Oct. 29 with a final score of 190-110. New Mexico swimming last participated in the Phill Hansel Cougar Classic Invitational where it finished eighth with a score of 259. Jorgi Hobson, Monica Dudley and Ashley Blanchette all broke school records in the 100-yard butterfly, 500-, 1,000- and 1,650- freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke, respectively.
The divers saw action in the University of Arizona Wildcat Diving Invitational. Ashlee Erickson had the highest finish for UNM when she came in second in the 1-meter springboard with a score of 290.00.
The Aztecs come into the meet after the swimmers came in fifth place at the Arena Invitational in Long Beach, Calif. The divers were also at the Wildcat Diving Invitational along with New Mexico. Aztec senior Kristen Meier finished first in the 1-meter springboard with a score of 291.95.
The battle against the Lobos and the Aztecs will be intense of the boards as both Meier and Erickson are diving at the top of their game. Erickson has been named MW Diver of the Week three times this season and Meier has garnered the honor twice. Erickson currently holds the top three scores in the conference off the 1-meter springboard and Meier holds the fourth highest score. Off the 3-meter board Erickson and Meier stand first and second.
The contest against San Diego State will be the last meet of 2011 for the Lobos. They will return to action Jan. 14 when the swimmers travel to Grand Junction, Colo. for the Maverick Meet.
