The University of New Mexico women’s golf team dropped one spot into 11th place after two rounds of the 38th Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas. UNM shot a 15-over 303 today for a two-round total of 602 (299-303) at the University of Texas Golf Club (par 72, 6,344 yards).
UNM trails host and 20th-ranked Texas (581) by 19 shots entering Wednesday’s final round. The Lobos, however, are just eight shots out of third place in the 15-team field.
Starting on hole 10 today, the Lobos got off to a slow start by making the turn in 13 over. They rallied over the final nine holes, though, playing 1 through 9 in just 2 over.
Today’s round featured eagles for senior Sarah Salvo and sophomore Manon De Roey, both coming on the 459-yard, par-5 5th hole. Salvo rolled in a 12-foot putt while De Roey only need a tap-in for a 3.
Senior Rebecca Hellbom continues to pace the Lobos. She is tied for 11th place at 2-over 146 (70-76). Hellbom was 4 over after the first nine holes, but shot even par the rest of the way. Hellbom is five shots behind Florida’s Mia Piccio, who leads the field at 141 (71-70).
De Roey and sophomore Sofia Hoglund are tied for 23rd at 149. Playing as an individual, De Roey (74-75) was 4 over on her round after 13 holes. She then went birdie-eagle before making bogeys on 7 and 9. Hoglund (74-75) shot 40 on the front, but closed with birdies on 1 and 9 for a 35 on the back.
Salvo’s round was headed south in a hurry as she was 7 over after just six holes. The eagle – her first as a Lobo – led to a 34 on the back and a round of 76. Salvo is tied for 39th at 153 (77-76).
Sophomore Sammi Stevens is tied for 46th at 154 (78-76), but it could have been lower. She was 2 under after eight holes and even following a birdie at No. 5, but double bogeys at 6 and 9 pushed her score to a 76.
Junior Beth Buchner is at 161 (81-80), and in 72nd place.
The Lobos begin final-round action Wednesday at 7:45 a.m. Mountain time.
