The University of New Mexico women’s golf team is tied for 10th place after the first round of the 38th Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas. UNM and Arkansas shot an 11-over 299 at the University of Texas Golf Club (par 72, 6,344 yards), and trail 10th-ranked Florida (285) by 14 shots entering Tuesday’s second round.
After making the turn at 7 over, the Lobos played holes 10-14 in 1 under. They faltered a bit down the stretch, however, dropping a combined five strokes on the last four holes.
Lobo senior Rebecca Hellbom shot a season-best 70 (36-34) and is tied for third place. She is two shots behind Florida’s Evan Jensen, who opened with a 4-under 68. Hellbom racked up birdies at 10, 13 and 14 to move to 3-under before making a bogey 5 on 15.
Playing as an individual and starting on No. 10, sophomore Manon De Roey had a solid round at 2-over 74 (35-39). She was 2 under through 13 holes, but made bogeys on 5 and 6 and a double bogey on 7 to fall back.
Sophomore Sophia Hoglund also shot a 74 (36-38). She was in red numbers at 1 under following a birdie at No. 12, but took a double-bogey 6 on 15 and a bogey on 17.
Senior Sarah Salvo shot 77 (40-37), sophomore Sammi Stevens finished with a 78 (38-40) and junior Beth Buchner struggled to an 81 (41-40), her worst round of the fall season.
The Lobos begin second-round action Tuesday at 8:09 a.m. Mountain time on hole 10.
