Lone Star Invitational Final Results 
SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Lone Star? The Lobos had several stars on Tuesday.
The 15th-ranked University of New Mexico men’s golf team survived the blustery conditions to earn an eight-stroke victory at the Lone Star Invitational at the Briggs Ranch Golf Course.
The Lobos managed a 13-over par 301 in the final round for a three-day total of 3-under-par 861. Texas A&M, four strokes behind the Lobos going into the final round, shot a 17-over 305 to finish tied for second with North Texas (14-over 302) with an overall score of 869.
The victory is UNM’s first since the Mark Simpson Invitational in September of 2010.
“The weatherman was right,” said 11th-year head coach Glen Millican, who locked up trophy No. 17 for his UNM coaching career. “The wind blew strong from the north. Scoring was more difficult today, as the scores showed. We didn’t play our best golf today, but the guys worked hard to get the round in and hold on for the win.
“Winning a team title is very difficult, so it is special anytime you can get one.”
Texas State took advantage of an early start time to post the best score of the day at 6-over 294 to finish at 6-over 870 for the tournament for fourth place. UNM’s 13-over was the second lowest round of the day.
Lobo junior John Catlin shot a 6-over 78 to finish third in the individual competition at 4 under. He was three strokes behind the tournament winner, Jeff Wibawa of Rice. Wibawa shot an even-par 72 to win with a score of 7 under. Baylor’s Joakim Mikkelsen was second at 6 under after firing a 3-over 75 in the final round.
Catlin led after the first round with a 64 and was just one stroke behind after Monday’s second round. But the course played tougher as the day wore on, with wind gusts reported up to 35 miles per hour. The conditions took a toll on both Catlin and second-round leader Roman Robledo, who shot a 10-over 82 to finish in a fourth at 1 under. Both were among the last players on the course.
UNM freshman Victor Perez shot a final-round 2-over 74 to finish in a ninth-place tie at 1-over for the event.
Junior James Erkenbeck’s 3-over Tuesday left him in a tie for 17th place at 3-over. Freshman Gavin Green finished tied for 23rd, despite a 9-over 81 in the third round. Junior Benjamin Bauch tied Perez for UNM’s low round Tuesday with a 2-over 74 and finished at 8-over for the tournament to tie for 38th place. Senior Alex Estrada, competing as an individual, also tied for 38th after shooting an 8-over 80.
