SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Withstanding furious charges from a pair of Texas teams, the University of New Mexico men’s golf team held a four-stroke lead after the second day of the Lone Star Invitational on Monday.

The Lobos posted a 2-under-par 286 to move to 16 under for the tournament, after they stormed the field with a first-round 274. Texas A&M posted the day’s low round with a 12-under 276 to get to 12 under for the event and assume second place.

North Texas’ 7-under 281 put its team in third place at 9 under after two rounds at the Briggs Ranch Golf Course.

The final round gets underway Tuesday, with the Lobos trying to win their first tournament since the 2010 Mark Simpson Invitational.

“If the weather forecast is correct, the course will play much tougher,” UNM coach Glen Millican said, referring to wind gusts expected to reach up to 30 miles per hour Tuesday. “Playing well will require patience and good course management.

“If the course plays the way the forecast shows, we’ll need to play smart golf and realize par is a good score on every hole.”

Lobo junior John Catlin, the tournament’s first-round leader, posted a 2-under 70 for a 10-under 134 after 36 holes, but he lost the lead to Houston’s Roman Robledo. Robledo shot a 5-under 67 and sits at 11-under 133.

“John has played very well in the first two rounds,” Millican said. “He needs to continue to hit the ball in play off the tee, and if he putts well, he should have a chance at the end.”

UNM freshman Gavin Green matched Catlin’s performance Monday and is in a sixth-place tie at 5-under overall. Freshman Victor Perez is tied for 15th at 1-under after shooting a 3-over 75 in the second round. Senior Alex Estrada, competing as an individual, also is tied for 15th after posting a 2-over 74.

“(Sunday) was a great round, led by Catlin and the two freshmen,” Millican said. “Today wasn’t as great as Sunday, but we still played solid enough to stay in a good position heading into the final round.”
