The New Mexico women’s golf team fell two spots to fifth place after two rounds of the Susie Berning Maxwell Classic in Norman, Okla. UNM shot a 10-over 298 today on the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club (par 72, 6,327 yards) course for a 36-hole total of 11-over 587 (289-298).
The Lobos are 16 shots behind 25th-ranked Texas A&M (5-under 571) entering Tuesday’s final round. First-round leader Florida State is in second at 578.
Starting the second round in a tie for third place and just five shots behind Florida State, UNM struggled on the front side, playing the first nine holes in 8-over. The Lobos righted themselves on the back, though, losing just one stroke.
New Mexico continues to be led by sophomore Sofia Hoglund, who is tied for seventh at 1-under 143 (70-73). The winner of last month’s Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque was three over after a bogey at 12, but she birdied 13 and 18 for a 73 today.
Hoglund trails Oklahoma’s Anne Tanguay (139) by four shots. Tanguay shot a 67.
Senior Rebecca Hellbom is tied for 11th after shooting a 74. She has a two-day total of 145 (71-74).
Junior Beth Buchner shot 74 for the second straight day and is tied for 22nd at 148.
Sophomores Manon De Roey (74-79) and Sammi Stevens (76-77) are tied for 47th at 153.
The Lobos begin final-round play Tuesday at 8 a.m. MDT.
