SAN ANTONIO, Texas — University of New Mexico junior golfer John Catlin fired an 8-under 64 to take the opening-round individual lead and help the Lobo men’s team to the team lead after Sunday’s first day of the Lone Star Invitational.

UNM fired a 14-under 274 to take a five-stroke lead over Houston at the Briggs Ranch Golf Course. Arizona is in third place, seven shots off the pace.

Catlin leads Baylor’s Joakim Mikkleson and Houston’s Roman Robledo by two strokes. Lobo freshman Victor Perez shot a 4-under 68 and is tied for fourth place, while fellow freshman Gavin Green is tied for seventh with a three-under 69. Senior Alex Estrada, who is competing as an individual, also is tied for seventh at 69.

The Lobos have two runner-up finishes and a fourth-place finishes in their first three events of the fall. The second round takes place Monday with the final round on Tuesday.
