LAS VEGAS, NEV.–It’s the first day of the ITA Regional Championship and one Lobo will be advancing to the round of 32. The Lobos were just one team out of many invited to participate in this tournament. The ITA Regional Championship invited UNM along with U.S. Air Force Academy, Boise State, Brigham Young, University of Colorado, Colorado State, University of Denver, University of Idaho, University of Montana, Montana State, University of Nevada-Reno, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, University of Nevada-Las Vegas, University of Utah, Utah State, Weber State and University of Wyoming to compete in this tournament.
Michaela Bezdickova is seeded number five in the tournament receiving a bye in the first round leaving her to face off against University of Idaho’s Sophi Vickers in the second round. She defeated her with a score of 6-1, 6-0. She will be playing against Northern Arizona’s Hannah Stone in the round of 32.
Michaela Oldani defeated Utah State’s Sadi Wilkins in the first round with a score of 6-1, 6-3. She advanced to the round of 64, but lost a very intense close match against Denver University’s Steffi Rath with a score of 6-7, 6-0, 7-6.
The results from the first round of singles are as follows:
Alyssa Caffey was defeated by University of Wyoming’s Jessica Parizher with a score of 6-1, 6-1.
Nikolina Grbac fell to University of Nevada-Reno’s Sophie Stevens with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
Susanna Kuuttila lost in three sets to University of Montana’s Constance Alexander with a score of 6-7, 6-3, 6-3.
Laura Richardson fell to Montana State’s Charlotta Hjalmarsson with a score of 6-2, 6-3.
Maria Sablina played against Utah State’s Jaci West and was defeated with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Kristin Eggleston fell to Denver University’s Emma Isberg with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
With Michaela Bezdickova advancing to the round of 32 and doubles matches coming up tomorrow, Head Coach Roy Canada is looking forward to tomorrow’s results.
“It was a very long and tough day for us today. Misa [Michaela Bezdickova] came through playing really well and Michaela [Oldani] fought her heart out in the second round and lost a nail-biter tie breaker for the third,” he said. “In the rest of the matches we just did not play well. Tomorrow is another day, and we are looking forward to making up some lost ground.”
Doubles matches will start at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday October 13, 2011.
