BOISE, IDAHO–In the first day of the Boise State Invitational, UNM produced some outstanding results with seven Lobos left in singles, along with three doubles teams advancing in the tournament.
In the Blue flight of singles, Susanna Kuuttila, Nikolina Grbac and Michaela Bezdickova, will be competing in the quarterfinals. Maria Sablina will also be advancing to the consolation round of the quarterfinals.
Nikolina Grbac’s first match, she defeated Idaho State’s Zamira Vasquez with a score of 7-6, 6-4. She went on to win against Utah State’s Jaci West 6-7, 4-3 ret.
Maria Sablina lost her first match against Boise State’s Sandy Vo with a score of 6-1, 6-2. She bounced back and won against Weber State’s Thais Kurer with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 10-5.
Susanna Kuuttila received a bye in the first round, playing in the second round against Weber State’s Brittiny Moore defeating her with a score of 6-3, 6-0.
Michaela Bezdickova also received a bye and played in the second round against Utah State’s Kristina Voytsekhovich winning with a score of 6-4, 6-2.
In the Orange flight of singles, the Lobos will be competing against each other for the title. Alyssa Caffey, Michaela Oldani, Kristin Eggleston and Laura Richardson will be battling it out in the semifinals on who will win in the finals.
Alyssa Caffey won by default in the first round and went on to defeat Utah State’s Monica Abella with a score of 6-2, 6-1.
Michaela Oldani faced against Idaho State’s Rachel Ryan for her first match winning 6-3, 6-2. She then faced against Utah State’s Kimberly Watts finishing the match with a win of 6-2, 7-6.
Kristin Eggleston played against Weber State’s Annika Karlsen in the first round winning with a score of 6-1, 6-4. She played against Boise State’s Kaitlyn Brown in the quarterfinals finishing with a win of 6-4, 6-2.
Laure Richardson played Weber State’s Nittaya Phonharath for the first round defeating her with a score of 6-3, 6-2. She finished off all competition for the Lobos defeating Utah State’s Brianna Harris with a score of 6-2, 6-0.
In the Blue flight of doubles, the team of Maria Sablina and Nikolina Grbac, along with the team of Michaela Bezdickova and Alyssa Caffey will be advancing to the semifinals.
Maria Sablina and Nikolina Grbac defeated Idaho State’s Marsella/Tangarife in the first round with a score of 8-4. They went on to defeat Weber State’s Moore/Warwich in the quarterfinals with a score of 8-3.
Michaela Oldani and Susanna Kuuttila were defeated in the first round against Boise State’s Vo/Basil.
Michaela Bezdickova and Alyssa Caffey received a bye in the first round, and then played against Utah State’s Harris/Davis in the quarterfinals winning with a score of 8-3.
In the Orange flight of doubles, the team of Kristin Eggleston and Laura Richardson remain undefeated winning their first match out of their round-robin format.
Kristin Eggleston and Laura Richardson played their first match of the day against Weber State’s Lloyd/Miller defeating them with a score of 8-4.
“Very solid first day for us with 17 wins and only 2 losses,” Head Coach Roy Canada said. “Our fitness work is paying off and we are competing with loads of determination.”
