The smell of fresh popcorn filled the air along with the sounds of carnival music, laughter and circus entertainers. The crowd was a sea of cherry and silver. For a single night on August 26, Hotel Albuquerque at Old Town transformed into an evening under the big top as the Lobo Club Howl of a Good Time Auction took place.

The Howl of a Good Time Auction, in its ninth year of tradition, is the Lobo Club’s biggest fundraising event of the year. The $158,000 raised from the auction goes to support the academic endeavors of University of New Mexico student-athletes through the Lobo Scholarship Fund.

Over 500 Lobo supporters from far and wide were in attendance. Some attendees included: Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs, Lobo coaching staff, student-athletes and dignitaries such as UNM Dr. David J. Schmidly, Mayor Richard Berry (Albuquerque) and Mayor Larry Abraham (Los Ranchos). Prior to dinner service the UNM fight song engulfed the room as the UNM band, spirit program, student athletes and auction attendees sang Hail to Thee, New Mexico.

“When I got this job I heard the Howl was a great event. This year’s event far exceeded my expectations. I thought our staff and volunteers did a wonderful job and our donors really stepped up to support UNM student-athlete scholarships,” Associate Athletic Director of Development Lee De Leon said after his first ever Lobo Howl.

The Lobo Club is the Gateway to Giving for University of New Mexico Athletics that raises funds to help UNM student-athletes succeed on and off the playing surface. Since 1932, Lobo Club members have made donations that provide scholarships, facilities, and all other support necessary for Lobo student-athletes to excel academically and compete for championships.
