Colorado Springs, Colo. — The University of New Mexico swimming and diving program had 19 athletes named Academic All-Mountain West as announced by the conference on Monday. The Lobos tied for a league high with BYU who also had 19 athletes honored by the conference. UNM was one short of the record 20 athletes that were named last spring.

To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.

UNM also had 11 athletes named Mountain West Scholar-Athletes, the highest academic honor bestowed by the conference. New Mexico lead the league in Scholar-Athlete’s named for the 2010-2011 season.

Swimming and diving tied with the UNM women’s basketball team for the highest number of athlete’s with GPA’s higher than 4.0 with three each. Melissa Bollig, Maria Dudley and former Lobo Nanette Wittenberg led the way for UNM with team high grade point averages (GPA) of 4.26, 4.13 and 4.04 respectively.

To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
