Five members of the University of New Mexico women’s golf team have received the 2010-11 Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athlete Award, the conference announced recently.

Receiving the award for the third time in their careers are Rebecca Hellbom and Sarah Salvo. Hellbom holds a 3.84 cumulative grade-point-average, majoring in Musical Performance. Salvo is majoring in Business Administration and has a 3.58 GPA. Both Hellbom and Salvo completed their junior year at UNM in May.

Beth Buchner was recognized for the second straight year, posting a 3.64 GPA with a major in Business Administration.

Manon de Roey and Sofia Hoglund – freshmen in 2010-11 – received the award for the first time. De Roey had a 3.51 GPA in her first year at UNM while Hoglund had a team-high 4.01. Neither has declared a major.

“I’m always proud of our team for their achievements in the classroom,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “They understand the importance of receiving an education.”

The Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the Conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
