COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The 2011 Mountain West All-Conference softball awards, as selected by the league’s six head coaches, were announced today. New Mexico junior Danielle Castro and sophomore Stefanie Carramusa were honored by the coaches. UNLV senior Ashli Holland was named MW Player of the Year, while BYU senior Paige Affleck earned the MW Pitcher of the Year award. San Diego State’s Hayley Miles garnered MW Freshman of the Year acclaim, and BYU head coach Gordon Eakin captured MW Coach of the Year honors for the third consecutive season.
Castro, a native of Torrance, Calif., led UNM in hitting during conference play with a .455 batting average. She started all 15 league games and had a team-high 20 hits and five doubles. Castro hit three home runs, including a game-winner against BYU in the home finale on May 7. This season, she hit .376 with 11 doubles, a career-high seven home runs and 27 RBIs.
Carramusa, a native of Tucson, Ariz., had a .356 batting average in 15 league games. She had six home runs during conference action and had a team-high 14 RBIs. As the shortstop, Carramusa had a .967 fielding percentage with only two errors. During the year, she had a .300 average with a career-high 11 homers and a team-high 38 RBIs.
