PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Spencer Levin is at it again.

A two-time All-American golfer for the University of New Mexico from 2004-05, Levin has proven to be one of the PGA Tour’s rising young stars this season, notching three top-10 finishes and pocketing over $1.3 million in earnings entering this week’s Players Championship.

Well, add anther $175,071 to that total. Levin again finished near the top of the leaderboard this week, closing strong at the Players Championship. It’s held at the daunting TPC Sawgrass course – known worldwide for its 17th hole, the intimidating par-3 with an island green.

Levin strung together four rounds of par or better at the Players Championship, carding an 8-under-par 72-69-68-71=280 to finish in a seven-way tie for 12th place. For his efforts, Levin pulled down that cool $175,071 in earnings.

Among those to finish at 8-under with Levin were tour notables Sergio Garica, Steve Stricker and Davis Love III.

Sunday’s finish pushed Levin’s season earnings to $1,487,436. His 723 FedExCup points are 23rd best among all golfers worldwide. He’s made the cut in 11 of the 15 tour events he’s played in this season, finishing in the top 25 eight times.

New Mexico head coach Glen Millican knows of Levin’s abilities like few other. Levin was an integral member of Millican’s 2004 and ’05 Mountain West Conference championship teams during his two years as a Lobo. He still holds a number of school records, including career low scoring average (70.20), single-season low stroke average (69.98, 2004-05) and individual low 54-hole total score (198, 2004 Nelson Invitational).

“It’s been exciting to follow Spencer this season and see him enjoy success on the PGA Tour,” Millican said. “He’s been a great player for a long time and his years of hard work are certainly evident by his play in recent years.”

The Sacramento, Calif. native got hot in early February and rode that momentum for eight straight weeks. It started when Levin posted four consecutive sub-par rounds at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am to finish tied for fourth in mid-February for his first top-10 finish of the season.

The following week, he was one of a PGA Tour-record nine players tied for the lead after the first round of the Northern Trust Open at 4-under-par, where he finished tied for 12th.

One week later, he posted rounds of 68-67-67-65 to finish with a 17-under 267 at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, forcing a playoff with Johnson Wagner. Wagner took the title on the first playoff hole with a par.

Making his eighth start in as many weeks, Levin opened with a 3-under-par 67 to hold the first-round lead at The Honda Classic. He finished tied for 14th, his fourth top-15 finish in succession.

He opened with a bogey-free 6-under 66 and the largest 18-hole lead of the season (three strokes) at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Levin added rounds of 70-71, and entered the final round in second place, trailing Martin Laird by two strokes. Playing in the final group Sunday, Levin posted a front-nine 41 en route to a 76, finishing tied for 6th at 5-under.
