ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico head softball coach Erica Beach announced today the signing of three National Letters of Intent. The Lobos inked catcher Adriana Correa, right-handed pitcher Carrie Sheehan and infielder Mia Hignojos. They will join the Lobo softball program this fall. This is the first full signing class for New Mexico under Beach, who is in her first season.
“The Lobos are so excited to welcome Carrie, Adriana, and Mia to the family,” said Beach. “These young ladies will bring a ton of depth and experience to the squad. They are high level players who know what it takes to win and I’m confident they will help this program continue on the path to great things. These ballplayers are all great kids who are passionate about becoming Lobos. We know they will all make a positive impact on this program and we are ready to see them wearing cherry and silver.”
Sheehan will add depth to the pitching rotation and increase the overall talent of the program. A native of Las Vegas, Nev., who played at Cimarron-Memorial High School for coach Steve Gorden. She signs with the Lobos after a brilliant prep career. Sheehan is a three-time All-District and All-State selection in Nevada. She also played travel ball for the Las Vegas Rage Gold and was coached by Chris McDonald.
“Carrie will be a great addition to the current pitching staff,” said Beach. “She has a great build and has the capability to pitch with power as well as move the ball. She is a great kid who will bring a great attitude and great pitching ability to the team”
Correa is a first team All-City selection in 2010 and earned All-Valley Mission League honors. She was named the Offensive Player of the Year in 2010 at John F. Kennedy High School. Correa is a talented catcher with the ability to make an impact on the Lobo program. She brings outstanding defensive skills and the ability to hit for an average.
“Adriana is a player who will help the team both defensively and offensively,” commented Beach. “She is a solid catcher who has the capability to lead from behind the plate. She will be a force to reckon with in the batters box and will help round out our lineup.”
Hignojos is a middle infielder from Midland, Texas. She is a multi-sport athlete competing in cross country, basketball, softball and was in the band while in high school. She hit .387 as a senior with four home runs, 14 RBIs and had a slugging percentage of .742. She was a two-time first team All-District honoree and was named the Defensive and Offensive Most Valuable Player during her career. Hignojos was a member of the National Honors Society during her junior and senior years. She also played club ball for the 18U American Freedom Gold squad that was coached by Tim Soefje.
“Mia is our most versatile player in the 2011 class,” said Beach. “She has the skills it takes to play almost any position and is an overall great athlete. She will bring much needed depth to the infield as well as a great bat.”
