ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The New Mexico softball team will host Colorado State Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lobo Field. The Lobos are looking to snap a four game losing skid and build upon its 17-21 overall record and 3-5 Mountain West mark. UNM swept CSU in a pair of games earlier this year in Fort Collins. The Rams are 7-36 this season and 0-8 in league play. The game will be available via gametracker on GoLobos.com.
UNM will host a free youth clinic after the CSU game. The clinic is open to all little leaguers in uniform and will consist of a 90-minute technique school. The Lobo coaches and players will teach the fundamentals and basic tools to play the game.
New Mexico has seven games remaining this season and will open a four-game homestand Saturday. The Lobos host BYU and Utah next weekend to close out the home portion of the schedule. The May 7 game against BYU at 1 p.m. will be broadcast on the MountainWest Sports Network.
The Lobos are hitting .300 as a team with 60 doubles, 12 triples and 32 home runs. Junior Jessica Garcia ranks second in the conference with a .424 batting average. Garcia is clearly a MWC Player of the Year candidate. She ranks fifth in RBIs (33), first in doubles (14), second in home runs (10) and first in total bases (99). The top four hitters for the Lobos are juniors.
UNM is utilizing sophomores Kaela DeBroeck (8-12) and Kari Gutierrez (8-9) in the circle.
CSU has lost nine straight games. The Rams are looking for their first win since a 9-5 victory over Northern Colorado on March 26. Colorado State is hitting .253 as a team with 37 home runs and 42 doubles. The Rams have used five different pitchers and have a team ERA of 9.81.
Saturday will feature two first-year head coaches in New Mexico’s Erica Beach and CSU’s Jen Fisher. Both coaches are looking to build programs into national contenders. Saturday’s game will feature two young teams. CSU has the only two seniors playing in the game. UNM is a junior led program.
All Little League players who wear their uniforms get into the game and get to join the Lobo Softball Team for a 90 minute mini-clinic following the game for free! In order to participate in the clinic, players must be in uniform and must bring a signed waiver.
