FORT COLLINS, Colo. —- The University of New Mexico opened up the Mountain West Conference tournament to play Colorado State in the first round. Lobos fell to the Rams, 4-3. New Mexico ends their season with 8-15, 1-8 record. Freshman Michaela Bezdickova was recently announced as member of the All-Mountain West Team for singles honors.
The match was a close one, with four out of the six matches going to three sets. New Mexico took the top three seeds. No. 1 Bezdickova won against Caitlin Fluegge, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6. Senior Anya Villanueva at No. 2 defeated Tori Arneson, 6-0, 7-5, 7-6. At No. 3 Freshman Nikolina Grbac beat Lauren Mulhern, 6-1, 6-3.
Lobo Head Coach Roy Cañada was proud of his team’s heart and effort displayed.
“It was a battle from the beginning to the end,” Cañada said. ” The momentum shifted many times over. Nikolina started it in her singles taking care of business. Anya and Michaela came up big at the end with third set tiebreakers. We had several chances being up in No. 4, 5 & 6, I am proud of the heart and effort, we came short and it hurts. We can take that hurt to motivate us for next year.”
