In Tempe, Ariz., the University of New Mexico women’s golf team moved up two spots to finish in 14th place at the PING/ASU Intercollegiate. The Lobos shot 303 today to end the 54-hole tournament at 917 (305-309-303) on the Karsten Golf Course (par 72, 6,230 yards).
New Mexico entered the final round in 16th and was eight shots out of 14th. UNM, ranked 51st in the latest GolfStat poll, finished ahead of No. 34 Washington and 43rd-ranked Denver.
No. 3 UCLA won the team title at even-par 864, two shots better than top-ranked Southern California.
The 17-team field featured 14 teams ranked in the top-50 of the most recent GolfStat poll.
An encouraging sign for UNM and head coach Jill Trujillo heading into the MWC Championships later this month was the play of Rebecca Hellbom. The Lobo junior shot 75 in the final round to finish at 224 (75-74-75), tying for 30th place. For Hellbom, it’s her best 54-hole total since the first tournament of the season when she shot 215 at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic.
Sophomore Manon de Roey (79-80-78) tied for 76th at 237.
UNM freshman Sofia Hoglund, playing as an individual, finished at 256 (86-85-85).
New Mexico’s next competition is April 14-16 at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Litchfield Park, Ariz. The Lobos are seeking their fourth consecutive MWC team title.
