In Tempe, Ariz., the University of New Mexico women’s golf team is in 15th place after the first round of the PING/ASU Intercollegiate. The Lobos shot a 17-over 305 on the Karsten Golf Course (par 72, 6,230 yards).

No. 3 UCLA was as hot as the searing desert heat today, blazing to a 12-under 276. The Bruins, with four of the top-nine golfers after the first round, have a 5-shot lead over top-ranked Southern California (281).

Today’s round was played in temperatures that approached 100 degrees.

The 17-team field features 14 teams ranked in the top-50 of the most recent GolfStat poll. Second-round action begins Saturday at 9 a.m. MDT.

Juniors Rebecca Hellbom and Sarah Salvo posted the Lobos’ top round today at 75 (+3). Hellbom finished with a birdie on the par-4 18th. Salvo was 1 over after 16 holes, but made bogey on the final two holes.

Sophomore Beth Buchner came in with a 76.

Freshmen Manon de Roey each shot 79. de Roey’s round featured nine pars, five bogeys, two birdies and two double bogeys. She was 3-over after a birdie at 13, but dropped four shots from holes 15-17.

UCLA’s Tiffany Lua has the individual lead after firing a 5-under 67. She has a 2-stroke lead over three golfers tied at 69.
